"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32(NKJ)

My conversion was not a Damascus Road experience - the Lord had chosen me before the world was formed and I just obeyed His call when I was a young high school student. I was born into a Christian family; my father comes from a Hindu high caste Brahmin family and came to know the Lord by reading Mark’s Gospel, a copy of which he bought from a group of foreigners who were selling them on the Streets of Calcutta.

My parents left their vocation to serve the Lord as full time Christian workers with the Brethren Assemblies when I was very young. From my childhood I was interested in Science and used to experiment with various science projects. I accepted the Lord in my childhood, when my Mother used to tell Bible stories. When I was 14 years old I obeyed the Lord by being baptised. Beside my studies I was active in sharing my faith with my friends and also in helping my parents in their ministry among the lepers, street children and with students on Bible correspondence courses.

While I was studying for my Bachelors Degree in Biological Science at Serampore College (Calcutta University), I was confronted by the issue of Evolution verses Creation; with the following questions asked by my friends and professors “How can you, being a student of Science believe in God?” “Being a biological science student, how can you believe in virgin birth?” “After studying Darwin’s Origin of the Species’ and Lamark, will you still believe in the Creation account of the Bible?” I was puzzled and didn’t really have the answers. My faith was shaken, I had my friends and professors on one side and on the other the elders of the Brethren Assembly (church). The church I found was busy with doctrinal issues and such as which the version of the Bible is accurate? What language should we use in prayer? Should musical instruments be used in worship services? Etc. When I approached them with my problems, as a youngster who was battling with the world, I didn’t really find the answers and they were not very considerate.

My faith was shaken yet again and I began to raise questions about God, the authenticity of the Bible, miracles of the Lord Jesus Christ performed while in the world. I was also interested in listening to Ham and Short-wave Radio. In those days we had a hobby of listening to short-wave radio stations around the world and sending technical reception reports to obtain a QSL verification card from the Short-wave station. I had a good short-wave radio, which I received as a gift from my parents after finishing at high school. It was a hot summer Saturday afternoon and while I was scanning my radio dial to catch a distant radio signal, I tuned into a short wave religious station from USA Family Radio (WYFR). I found it interesting because the announcer invited the listeners to stay tuned in for the next fifteen minutes to listen to “Science Scripture and Salvation” – a programme featuring Dr. Henry Morris, the then president of the Institute for Creation Research. I listened to the whole programme and later jotted down the address of ICR. I then sent an airmail letter to Dr. Morris. To my surprise after a few weeks I received a personal signed reply from him, together with some literature. I began to search for books on this subject but the local Christian book distributor didn’t have anything. I got hold of a copy of ‘Science Speaks’ a very old Moody Press publication, in an old stack of books, donated by a missionary who had left India. Meanwhile I met one of our family friends from the UK, who introduced me to Dr. John C Whitcomb’s ‘Origin’ series. I got hold of a set of these and listened to them several times. I was also in touch with Family Radio. They gave me addresses of several Churches in the USA who so graciously sent me some tapes on the Evolution verses Creation debate and others on the subject of Science and the Bible.

Later another friend of my parents gave us a six part series of Videotapes of Prof, A E Wilder Smith, along with a VCR, as a gift from Australia. He also paid my subscription for the Creation magazine, published by the Creation Science Foundation, Australia. I started lending the magazines and a few tapes to my friends and also invited them over for a cup of tea in order to show the videos. Many who were not interested in religion took time to watch as the gospel was being shared by people who were scientists or from a scientific background.

I had a burning passion for reaching my friends and science students. After my graduation I had a call to serve the Lord full time. I joined a Christian publishers, engaged in distribution of Christian literature for personal evangelism. Literature and other materials on Creation Science were scarce in India, and what was available was very expensive. There were times when I bought a book on Creation that cost nearly a month’s salary. I married Sushmita in 1995 and for our wedding present we decided to get more books, tapes and videos on Creation Science. This was also the time when I met Paul Barnes from the UK who was visiting India. While sharing the need of India, I discovered that much had been done for the poor and needy people, yet very little effort had been made to reach the educated and elite of Indian society, the educated middle class (approx. 250 million) are the least evangelized in India. Paul encouraged me to think seriously along with a few other friends of commencing a “creation” ministry.

I was in touch with Dr. Andrew Snelling, Mr. Malcolm Bowden and a few other creationists who have given their wise counsel to form the Creation Science Association of India. In the year 1999 we registered the trust here in India as a religious educational trust, the same year I visited the UK and had the joy of meeting several creationist groups. Many of them very graciously donated books, tapes and CD’s for our ministry here in India.

I resigned from the Christian publishing in March 2001, where I had worked since 1988, in order to devote my time to the work of the Creation ministry in India. We are probably the only Creationist group here in India. The challenge is immense, to make the Church more aware of the Creation verses Evolution issue. We need to teach people to uphold the authority of the Bible and defend it from the very first verse, as well as to reach the educated and elite of our society with the Gospel.  Ours is a faith venture supported by friends and individuals.
